Client Brief
Arup, a global leader in sustainable engineering, relocated from their long-standing premises to a brand-new, purpose-built HQ. The move wasn’t just about new desks but about creating a space that reflects their people-first culture and supports a neurodiverse workforce. Our job was to provide a thoughtfully curated selection of pods, collaborative settings and inclusive workpoints, designed for flexibility, accessibility and comfort.
Design Approach
Working alongside Perkins&Will, the focus from the start was on multifunctionality, neurodiversity, and futureproofing. Arup wanted to bring their people back into the office with purpose, to collaborate, connect and concentrate. Every piece of furniture had to earn its place, with accessibility and adaptability baked in.
We conducted extensive research across the market, bringing the client along to showroom tours and the team ended up selecting a mix of pod solutions and collaborative furniture from Spacestor and Orangebox.
The Air Pods from Orangebox were chosen for their excellent fire regulation compliance with open-top roofs for sprinkler systems. Spacestor’s open booth pods were also selected as DDA-compliant integrated video conferencing zones. The breakout spaces and open meeting setups were designed for teamwork and dynamic working. Moreover, we made sure the desking were flexible since Arup integrated a full desk booking system so staff could choose where and how they work each day.
The entire space was carefully tailored to create a choice of work settings, quiet pods for focus, open zones for conversation, tech-ready nooks for video calls, all whilst maintaining the highest standards of inclusivity and compliance.
Challenges & Results
This was a project built on clear communication and a collaborative approach. There were no major challenges. We worked transparently with the client at every stage to make sure expectations were exceeded, not just met. The attention to neurodiverse design and DDA compliance helped deliver a workplace that truly welcomes everyone.
We now handle the ongoing service and aftercare for all Arup furniture.
